앨범평

'親자본 앨범'들을 발표해온 '反자본주의 밴드' 매닉 스트릿 프리처스의 통산 네 번째 작품이다. 돌연 실종된 밴드의 이미지 메이커 Richey James의 빈자리를 그대로 남겨 추억하며 준비한 본 작은 현재 이들을 두고 통용되는 '브릿팝 밴드'의 성격을 가득 머금은 것으로 펑크와 하드락을 접목했던 지난 시절의 체 게바라식 '애티튜드'를 자제하고 멜로딕하고 감미로워진 비틀즈식 '감성'을 유감없이 노출시키고 있다.(물론 사회주의 이념을 바탕으로 스케치되는 사회적, 정치적, 그리고 철학적 '활자'소묘들은 그들의 변하지 않은 스피릿을 방증하는 것이므로 겉모습이 변했다하여 빨간(?) 속까지 뒤바뀐건 아니다.) 슬로우 락 비트에 실린 눈부신 상념 'A Design For Life', 초창기 시절의 날카로움이 묻어나는 'Kevin Carter', 작법의 스케일이 달라진 앨범 성격을 대표하는 'Everything Must Go', 영국 밴드만이 가진 감성의 결과물 'The Girl Who Wanted To Be God', 마이너한 기타팝의 사색 'Removables', 예쁘고 활기찬 곡 'Australia'등 냉소적이고 반항적이었던 Richey를 추모(?)하고자 소프트하게 변신한 이들의 음악은 심하게 매력적이다. 한마디로 영국의 컬렉티브 소울이라고나 할까. /김성태ⓒ changgo.com

이 앨범은 뭐하나 버릴 곡이 없는 이름바 명반이다.
들으면 들을 수록 좋아서 계속 듣게 되는 명반이다.
특히나 A design for life는 처음 듣자마자 곡의 아름다움에 감동을 받았다.
